Large-scale online assessment in Indonesia

ACER news 4 minute read

Every year, more than one million students in Indonesia sit the University Entrance Test, one of three pathways to enroll in public university in Indonesia. Dr Urip Purwono, Head of the Center for Psychometric, Assessment, and Evaluation Studies at the University of Padjadjaran and Adviser for ACER Indonesia, who also works closely with the national institute responsible for University Entrance Test in Indonesia, spoke to Teacher about the annual large-scale online assessment.

Dr Purwono explained that two elements are measured in the assessment: cognitive ability and achievement. Students are given eight or nine separate scores: four to five scores for subject achievement and four scores for cognitive ability.

The assessment itself underwent major change between the 2018 and 2019 cycles.

‘In 2018, everybody who applied to a public university had to take this test on the same day at the same hours, regardless of where they were located,’ Dr Purwono said. ‘In 2019… they had an option to choose [from] 24 sessions available.’

The addition of multiple test sessions adds another challenge to the test developer, especially in the area of cheating prevention. There is a proposal to expand the test to not only public university entrance, but also private university entrance.
