Expressive Writing Workshop

Direct Instruction programs work. They are the epitome of mastery learning and abundant research demonstrates their effectiveness.

Expressive Writing I and II is for primary students and Essentials for Writing is for high school students.

Some students find it difficult to engage in the writing process because they have not yet mastered the fundamental skills. These two Direct Instruction programs provide instruction ranging through the skills of punctuation including quotations, subject-verb agreement, tense, inferences and interpretations, story retells, sequencing, editing, generating ideas, writing multi-paragraph passages including autobiographical and biographical sketches, writing business letters and writing persuasive essays that provide details and supporting  arguments.

Expressive Writing I is for students whose writing is difficult to understand because it is hard to identify their sentences and follow what they are trying to say. They learn to correctly use tense, pronouns, capitals and verbs and to accurately copy sentences, retell stories and write paragraphs and edit them.

Expressive Writing II is for students who can construct a simple paragraph but have problems with clarity, punctuation and sentence variety. They are taught more sophisticated skills including quotations, paragraphing and punctuation and progress to writing multi-paragraph passages based on descriptions and on imagination.

Participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate the capacity to use Expressive Writing I and II as well as Essentials for Writing
  • teach students the skills to become proficient writers
  • analyse and critically evaluate the ability level of students' writing skills
  • apply knowledge to implement direct instruction teaching strategies.
