Time: 9:30am - 4:00pm
Join Dr Roslyn Neilson at ACER for a full day workshop and learn about the challenges of spelling, and how to understand and support student learning.
Why is spelling an important part of literacy development?
What are the resources that students typically use as they learn to spell? The discussion will focus on phonemic awareness, awareness of English spelling patterns and awareness of morphemes.
How can you assess spelling so that you know what support students need?
The formal assessment tool that will be discussed is the AIST-2. As an extension of the AIST-2, the strategy will be explored of assessing spelling qualitatively, rather than relying only on a correct/incorrect score, in order to learn which resources the student is using.
