Summarising 2

Learning intention

For students to be able to develop the ability to write a short summary of the plot of a familiar text.

Ask

students to work with a friend and write their own summary of a familiar story. It could be a fairytale or short story from a favourite author.

Guide

students to select an appropriate story that has enough detail to allow for excluding information, but not so much that it is an enormous task.

Remind

students to ignore the details and to include characters and key pieces of action and plot that cover the entire story.

Share

students' summaries and ask for peer feedback on how successful the summary is.

Ask:

Does it require more or less detail?

Ask:

Does it still maintain its meaning?

Extension

Ask

students to design a short cartoon strip of any of the short stories discussed or of their own summary. Include speech bubbles.

Share,

provide feedback and display.
