ACER a proud partner in strengthening Australia’s teaching workforce

Media release 4 minute read

The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) will continue its long-standing role in delivering the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE).

ACER has been selected by the Australian Government to continue developing and administering the LANTITE.

LANTITE helps ensure aspiring teachers are classroom ready by demonstrating literacy and numeracy skills which place them in the top 30 per cent of the Australian adult population.

ACER has been involved since 2016 in developing and delivering LANTITE. Over that time, around 90 per cent of pre-service teachers have passed on their first attempt, reflecting the strength and support of accredited Australian initial teacher education programs in preparing pre-service teachers’ personal literacy and numeracy skills.

‘As part of our mission to improve learning for all, we see LANTITE as an essential safeguard to ensure students across Australia have access to capable and confident teachers,’ ACER CEO Lisa Rodgers said.

‘We’re proud to deliver a valid, fair and reliable assessment of pre-service teachers’ literacy and numeracy skills, and to support policy refinements over time that strengthen LANTITE’s contribution to producing classroom-ready graduates.’

In 2023, the LANTITE statement of results was updated to provide clearer and more comprehensive feedback to candidates and higher education providers. Since 2024, all students undertaking an accredited teaching qualification are required to sit LANTITE in their first year of study providing earlier insight into strengths and areas for improvement.

ACER will continue to provide candidates with practice tests, clear advice and appropriate reasonable adjustments. This reflects our commitment to fair, high-quality assessment.
