The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) released the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) national report at 9pm AEDT on Tuesday 3 December 2013.
PISA 2012 – managed by ACER for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) – measured the mathematical, scientific and reading literacy of around 510 000 students across 65 participating countries and economies, including 34 OECD countries and 31 partner countries or economies.

A report released by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) reveals the mathematics and reading skills of Australian 15-year-olds have slipped backwards over the past decade.
Releasing the report, PISA 2012: How Australia measures up, ACER’s Director of Educational Monitoring and Research, Dr Sue Thomson said, “Despite still performing above the OECD average, Australia’s backwards slide in achievement shows that there is some cause for concern.”

Dr Sue Thomson, Head of Educational Monitoring and Research at ACER, and Professor Geoff Masters, Chief Executive of ACER, are available for comment.
Dr Thomson is National Project Manager for Australia for PISA, and the Australian National Research Coordinator for two International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) studies: Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), and Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). Dr Thomson's research at ACER has involved extensive analysis of large-scale national and international data sets, including the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth, TIMSS and PISA. Read more
Professor Masters has served on a range of bodies, including terms as Chair of the Technical Advisory Group for PISA and Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee for the IEA. He has undertaken a number of reviews for governments, and developed the National School Improvement Tool endorsed by education ministers in December 2012. Read more
