ACER streamlines Victoria Police recruitment with secure online testing
Media release less than 1 day ago 4 minute readThe Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) is proud to support Victoria Police in modernising its recruitment process with the introduction of secure, at-home online testing — a major step toward getting more recruits on the beat faster.
From 1 November, aspiring Victoria Police officers will have the flexibility to complete the entrance exam online at home or at a designated testing venue. Testing slots will be available every 10 minutes, day and night, including weekends and public holidays — dramatically increasing accessibility and speeding up the recruitment pipeline.
Lisa Norris, Head of Department, Tertiary and Industry Tools at ACER, said the innovation reflects a shared commitment to modernising recruitment and strengthening community safety.
‘We’re proud to support Victoria Police with an innovative online testing solution that’s secure, accessible and efficient,’ Ms Norris said. ‘This change gives applicants greater flexibility and allows more recruits to move through the pipeline faster — without compromising the high standards that are critical to public safety.’
The new online testing option is part of a broader effort by Victoria Police to streamline its recruitment process. ACER has been the trusted partner for the design and delivery of Victoria Police entrance exams for more than a decade, and will now extend this partnership to deliver the secure online testing option.
Ms Norris said the change is expected to make a huge difference for applicants from regional and remote areas who have previously committed to travelling long distances to access testing venues.
‘The new online option significantly reduces the cost to candidates living in regional or remote areas who previously have had to pay for travel and potentially accommodation to sit the test,’ she said.
‘By reducing barriers such as this additional cost, we’re ensuring there is greater opportunity for people to apply, no matter where they live, and a greater potential for Victoria Police to attract more candidates and ultimately build this important workforce.’
The updated entrance exam will now be completed in two hours instead of four and a half, with testing streamlined to four key areas: literacy, abstract reasoning, report writing and numeracy.
Supervision will be conducted remotely in real time via a secure browser, maintaining the rigour and integrity of the assessment.
ACER is a leader in secure, scalable online testing in Australia and internationally, delivering assessments for high-stakes entry and registration in fields including education, health and public safety. This includes online entrance testing for the Queensland Police Service, as well as testing programs for aspiring teachers, medical professionals and finance industry personnel.
Currently, more than 1200 applicants are waiting to complete the Victoria Police entrance exam. By moving to online testing, Victoria Police are helping reduce this bottleneck and accelerate the pathway from application to training.
Ms Norris said the initiative is an example of how strong partnerships can drive practical outcomes.
‘This is exactly the kind of collaboration that makes a real difference — using secure technology to remove barriers, create faster pathways and support the essential work of getting more police recruits out on the streets.’
