Ambitious teachers are always striving to improve. Whether you aim to make your lessons more engaging, achieve greater student involvement or get to know your students better, you are no doubt looking for ways to take your teaching to the next level.

With the new school year just around the corner, now is the perfect time to reflect on your teaching practice and to take your career to the next level.

Here are three resolutions that may inspire you.

#1 Build stronger relationships

Think about how you can build stronger relationships with your students in the new year. More than anything else, teaching is about the relationship between teacher and student; it’s no secret that students will work harder for a teacher they respect. At the same time, building a better connection with individual students enables you to build a stronger classroom community. And don’t stop at the students – take the time to build stronger relationships with parents and peers too. This could mean providing more timely feedback to parents, and sharing new ideas and thinking with your colleagues.

#2 Inject new thinking into the classroom

Is there a new teaching technique you’ve always wanted to try? Perhaps there are assessment methods you’ve been thinking about putting into practice? Wherever you are in your teaching career, take the opportunity to get outside your comfort zone and inject some new thinking into the classroom. Start by delving deeper into the latest research –Teacher magazine is a great place to start – then equip yourself with practical skills through a relevant course.

#3 Plan your next move
