Jakarta, 12 September 2019 – ACER Manager of School Assessment Services Dr Jarrod Hingston recently delivered a presentation to the Educational Office of DKI Jakarta Province on the results of PEMANDU, or the Integrated Numerical Ability Assessment, which assessed the numerical ability of students at several primary schools in Jakarta.

The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) Indonesia worked with the Educational Office of DKI Jakarta Province to conduct an online assessment of the mathematics proficiency of Year 3–6 students in Jakarta. The study, known as PEMANDU, focused on identifying students’ understanding of and performance in mathematics tasks in a 40-45-minute assessment.

PEMANDU has collected data from 2633 students in 28 schools in five districts in DKI Jakarta since April 2019. Respondents were selected to give a good spread across school type (public or private), locations, number of students and other demographics.

Several notable figures attended Dr Hingston’s presentation, including: Totok Amin Soefijanto, Policy Advisor of Governor Team for Development Acceleration, Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta; Didih Hartaya, Department Head of Elementary School & Special Education and Special Services; Lani Ganda, Head Country Representative, ACER Indonesia; Dr Urip Purwono, Head of Psychometric, Assessment, and Evaluation Center, Universitas Padjajaran; and Fitria Pramudina Anggriani, Senior Program Manager, ACER Indonesia.

Dr Hingston said in his presentation that students within the same year level may have very different levels of understanding and attain different learning levels. As well as determining where each individual student is in their learning, Dr Hingston said PEMANDU was able to give teachers supporting information about how to target teaching according to student needs, while the analysis has also provided evidence for policymakers on the state of the existing curriculum.

The Educational Office of DKI Jakarta Province welcomed the implementation of this research as a manifestation of its commitment to improving the quality of student learning and to building the capacity of teachers to use assessments and their results strategically. It is expected that PEMANDU can be developed further and implemented more broadly by education authorities including the DKI Jakarta Provincial Education Office.
