Australian Primary Principals Day 2026: celebrating the leaders shaping Australia’s future
ACER news less than 1 day ago 3 minute readToday on Australian Primary Principals Day, ACER recognises the exceptional leaders at the heart of primary schools across the country.
As the Australian Primary Principals Association (APPA) notes, principals are far more than educators. They are mentors, community builders, advocates and leaders who help students, staff and families navigate both challenges and successes.
This important day forms part of National Primary Education Week (3-7 August), a celebration of the learning, creativity and connection happening in primary schools across Australia. It's an opportunity to recognise the teachers, support staff and principals who help shape these experiences every day. For more information, resources and ways schools are celebrating, visit APPA's National Primary Education Week webpage.
Supporting school leaders
At ACER, we are proud to work alongside principals and school leadership teams across Australia through our research, assessment, professional learning and school improvement initiatives. From helping schools understand student learning data to supporting evidence-informed decision making, ACER's work helps leaders respond to the evolving needs of their students and communities.
Some of the ways ACER supports primary principals include:
-
School Improvement Tool and school improvement partnerships, helping principals and leadership teams use evidence to strengthen teaching, learning, student wellbeing and whole-school improvement planning.
-
PAT (Progressive Achievement Tests), used by around 60% of Australian schools to monitor student progress and support evidence-informed planning and teaching.
-
Professional learning for school leaders, including courses and workshops focused on assessment, student progress and school improvement practices.
-
National and international assessment and research programs, including ACER's global large scale assessment research that informs school, system and policy decision-making across Australia.
-
Teacher magazine, ACER's free publication featuring leadership insights, research and practical guidance for principals and school leaders.
ACER also collaborates directly with principals through research projects, school-based studies and advisory groups, ensuring the experiences and expertise of school leaders help shape educational practice and innovation.
On Australian Primary Principals Day, we thank the primary principals who lead with dedication, care and purpose. Their impact is felt every day in classrooms, playgrounds and school communities across Australia.
