Meet the PAT team: Amira Mahmood

Thursday, 12 Dec 2019

We've been meeting the team behind ACER's Progressive Achievement (PAT) approach recently and, this month, we introduce you to Amira Mahmood in the online school assessment team.

Who are you and what do you do?

Hi there! I’m Amira Mahmood and I’m a Senior Project Officer with the Online School Assessment team. I assist schools with the administration of online PAT assessments and the analysis of the results. I’m also involved in the trialling of new test content, a very important phase of test development. A special thank you to all the schools that have been involved in our trials this year.

Tell us about yourself.

I completed a degree in Sport Management in Perth and went on to study my masters in Melbourne. I worked in the sports industry for five years before an unexpected turn of events in 2015 led me to ACER and the world of education. What an amazing field to be involved in.

Any hobbies?

Keeping active at the gym and on a football (soccer) field. I also love venturing around Victoria and finding beautiful spots to hike and cycle.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Speaking to all the wonderful teachers out there. They are always so friendly, patient and appreciative even after a long and stressful day in the classroom!

And the worst?

Term 1 – it can at times feel like a call centre and unfortunately it’s just impossible to get to every call coming through. Again, teachers are so patient and appreciative, even if it does take us a little longer to get back to them.

What are you reading or watching right now?

I’m saving up my TV time for an upcoming nine hour flight! As for books, I recently received Mark Manson's bestseller, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, as a Kris Kringle gift. I'm not sure what to make of it yet…

What are you planning for the festive season?

My parents are based in Bahrain and this year we've decided to catch up in Bangkok over Christmas. I love the hustle and bustle of big cities and wandering around all their amazing day and night markets.

Tell us your favourite PAT tip, fact or insider secret…

Look out for the roll-out of our exciting new development – PAT Computer Adaptive Tests.
