The report found that just 2 per cent of the more than 46 000 grade 8 students who participated in the study demonstrated the ability to critically assess information found online. Additionally, it found that young people do not develop sophisticated digital skills just by growing up using digital devices.
ICILS was designed to measure international differences in students’ ability to use computers to investigate, create and communicate, in order to participate effectively at home, at school, in the workplace and in the community.
Education systems that took part in the 2018 cycle were: Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Korea, Luxembourg, Portugal, Russian Federation (Moscow), Uruguay and the United States. Australia did not participate.
